Once the beating heart of the city’s cultural life, Plaza Mayor has played host to bullfights, markets, symphonies, tournaments, and even executions. Originally built outside the city walls, the square is now ringed with trendy shops, restaurants, and alfresco cafes, ideal for soaking up the atmosphere and watching the buzzing street life. The enormous square, which at its center features an iconic equestrian statue of King Phillip III, is easily accessible by one of many walkways connected to the surrounding pedestrian streets. At its northern end, the square is enclosed by a two-towered municipal building, housing an informative visitor center where you can pick up maps of the city and arrange for sightseeing tours in and around the historic district. Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol are the two big, ‘don’t-miss’ plazas in Madrid. Plaza Mayor is the most photogenic one. It is surrounded by strikingly symmetrical, deep burgundy red facades with 100... more »
Beautiful square that you should visit when in Madrid. Shops and restaurants ring the square behind the arches. Admire the statue of Philip II in the center, but do not stop here to eat as all the restaurants are totally over priced and are typical tourist traps. Exit the square and wander around and you will almost immediately find good food at much more reasonable prices with better service. There is parking below the square if you are coming by car. Convenient but not cheap!
Awesome place. The oldest plaza in Madrid. The vibe is great. The multiple entrances will surely amaze you. Come here after the afternoon then you can get the best photo you like
