Admire the wide canopy of Cotton Tree, a kapok tree that symbolizes this town settled by freed U.S. slaves. The tree witnessed the establishment of Sierra Leone's capital by the British using African labor force in the late 18th century. British Black Loyalists, who had earned their freedom quelling the secessionists during the American war of independence, revered the tree and said their prayers of thanks for liberation. The tradition continues today, with locals leaving offerings in honor of their ancestors at the tree.
