The first structure ever built in Saint Petersburg, Peter and Paul Fortress serves as the final resting place of all Russian monarchs from Peter the Great to Alexander III. Constructed in 1703, the fortress takes up the better part of a small island in the river Neva. Designed to repel possible attacks by the Swedish navy, the massive structure never served its intended purpose, eventually becoming a notorious political prison. The most notable feature of this complex is its cathedral, boasting a gilded cupola and a bell tower that dominates the skyline from a height of over 120 m (400 ft). The fortress also houses a museum dedicated to the history of the city. This is my most favorite place of my trip in Saint Petersburg. Came here to visit Anastasia but found that they have much more interesting. Behind this fortress there is a nice shore which can take a walk along the Neva River. I visited here 2 days just to chill out after a long day.
I would say this is the second best place in Saint Petersburg for its beauty, history and scenic view of the sea! The cathedral is breathtakingly beautiful and don't forget to visit the curtain wall and the jail in the fortress. You can buy a combined ticket for 700 rub at a building called boat house in front of cathedral.
