The Marly Palace, Peterhof

Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Specialty Museum
Created as a private retreat for Peter the Great, The Marly Palace was inspired by the royal hunting lodges the emperor admired while traveling in France. Peter considered this palace-garden complex his "Russian Versailles," creating an intimate sanctuary within the vast grounds for his personal pleasure. He used the palace and the surrounding gardens for only two years before his death, and the quiet retreat eventually became a storage space for his furniture, art, clothing, and official gifts. Today, the thoroughly reconstructed site provides a peek at the days when Peter enjoyed the serenity of his tranquil sanctuary. Check online for visiting hours and tour options.
