The Castle of Óbidos is a well-preserved medieval castle located in the civil parish of Santa Maria, São Pedro e Sobral da Lagoa, in the municipality of Óbidos, Portuguese district of Leiria.HistoryÓbidos had its foundation in the existence of a fortified settlement, likely over the Luso-Roman castro and Roman oppidum (then civitas) on the hilltop, that was the mysterious Eburobrittium, once cited by Pliny the Elder as being situated between Collipo (near present-day Leiria) and Olisipo (Lisbon). Archeological surveys later resulted in the discovery of a forum, baths and other Roman structures near the settlement. The area was later settled by the Lusitanos (since the 4th century BC) and Romans in the first century, but later occupied by Visigoths during the 5th and 6th century and Muslims, who were responsible for fortifying the town in the 8th century.Make Castelo de Óbidos part of your personalized Obidos itinerary using our Obidos trip itinerary planner.

Very well-prepared food in a regal setting within the walls of the castle. Service is professional and gracious. Prices are on the high side, but so what, you're done dining like royalty! One caveat: insist on being seated in the main dining room. The smaller room at the entrance looks fine, but that's where the WC is, plus the entrance for the cleaning crew, and where linens, etc. are stored. Stick with the main room and be prepared for menu prices that are somewhat higher than you would expect in Portugal.

Guests should be informed at time of reservation that the facility has no conditions for senior or people with disabilities. Even at check in when making reservation for dinner with the family (7 people)we were not informed that to get to the restaurant we needed to walk up 55 steps outside with no rails. Ridiculous and dangerous specially with wet pavement.
