Narrating the rich history of Portugal's maritime achievements, Museu de Marinha boasts a collection of more than 17,000 nautical items. Housed inside the west wing of a Neo-Manueline monastery, the museum's exhibits evoke the country's domination of the seas during the so-called Age of Discoveries. Highlights include seaplanes, firefighting machines, reconstructions of royal barges, and 17th century globes depicting the world before the European discovery of Australia. Pay special attention to the museum's oldest exhibit: a wooden figure of Archangel Raphael that accompanied explorer Vasco da Gama on his famed voyage to India. Check the website for tickets, special events, and guided tours. Add Museu de Marinha to your Lisbon travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Lisbon day trip planning site.

Very interesting place to learn about the Portuguese naval history. Full of pub-quiz material for the curious and interesting history for the devoted. If you plan on digging in deeper, you should spend at least 3-4 hours inside. The ticket cost is reasonable, you also get a discount if you got the 3day pass

Exceeded expectations. It's an enjoyable stop with small crowds, compared to other tourist sites. Adults and kids alike enjoyed this. We spent about 45 minutes. The first section, with the new-world explorers is worth spending the most time. We then quickly browsed the next section with more modern ships, since ware not maritime people. The final section with the actual barges was cool, and the kids loved that.
