Fundacao Jose Saramago
Dedicated to one of Portugal's most celebrated authors, Fundacao Jose Saramago aims to educate the public about human rights and promote culture on a local and international level. Saramago, who made his name writing darkly humorous novels, established the foundation after winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. Constructed in the 16th century for the former viceroy to India, the foundation's building features a distinctive facade and windows. After exploring the permanent exhibit, drop by the on-site bookstore to pick up one of Saramago's books. In front of the building, notice the olive tree transplanted to this spot from the writer's hometown of Azinhaga. I didn't enter but found the facade of the house amazing. It is like small pyramids all over it. I understand the house refers to one of Portugal's most famous writers. more »

There are actually 2 museum in this building. the first floor is archaeological center which the visit is free and the other is Jose Saramago foundation exhibition. The archaeological museum contains the remaining of the buildings before the destructive earthquake in 1755 and provides information about the habituate of people and the formation of the city. the positive point is that the information are also in English as well as Portuguese. Besides the visit is free. However the Saramago foundation is 3 euros and 2 for students. Unfortunately there are no English translation for the description there so for me it was no highly educative. Even-though I could have a gimps over Saramago's life and I was amazed by how organised he was and the number of book he wrote.
