Create an itinerary including Belém Tower
A World Heritage Site, Belém Tower played an important role in Portuguese exploration during the Age of Discoveries. View the native beige-white limestone used in this Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style. King John II commissioned a defense system to be built at the end of the 15th century. The tower was not built until later, under King Manuel I, and was finally completed in 1519. Though the tower has seen many changes and additions to its original structure, it is still most famous for its beautiful 15th century architecture. As you explore, you'll discover the historical value of this site, which served as a defense at the mouth of the Tagus river and as a prison to many over several centuries. With our custom trip planner, Lisbon attractions like Belém Tower can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • If you realize most pictures are taken outside the tower. There is no point of fast pass online but do buy your tickets online as you will save probably an hour to queue in another line for tickets to visit the tower. The lines are ridiculously long, they limit the amount of people in a group to enter and exit. I believe about 60 people per group. Once you enter you must go according to how they want you. You cannot leave midway and there really isn’t much to see inside the tower, barely any views. My suggestion is take pictures outside which looks way better anyway. Originally plan to spend less than an hour took over two hours. The wait to enter the tower, then lining up to enter 3 different levels aside from lining up to exit every level due to the circle stairs. Management is horrible, there is definitely no time frame for this visit. You legit have to wait till the security people say it’s fine to exit the tower. Don’t waste your time.
  • The tower itself is fantastic. The building is incredible and a true testament to the potential ability of protection on the river here. The tour of the tower is about 30 min. There are about 2 hr 30 min of waiting in queues, however. You wait out to get in. You wait from one level to go to the next. You wait on that level to get back down. So, highly recommend seeing this (and the inside), but be prepared for not a lot of readings of plaques and to wait around for quite a bit.
