Dedicated to one of Norway's most well-known pioneering spirits, Kon-Tiki Museum displays the vessels, artifacts, and personal effects of Thor Heyerdahl. Heyerdahl famously set sail in 1947 on a raft from South America and traveled to Polynesia in order to reinforce his theory about pre-Columbian island colonization. Visit the museum to see the Kon-Tiki craft used on this excursion, as well as other reed boats Heyerdahl employed on later expeditions. Wander the different exhibits focused on Heyerdahl's life, his vessels, and the life and culture of the islands he visited. Don't miss the collection of more than 8,000 books--a tribute to Heyerdahl's prolific career as a scientist, researcher, and writer. This is a relatively outdated museum. I mean, the story of the expedition is quite unique and impressive. However, I felt that the materials that are used to tell it are rather old. It is not very engaging . The main reason to go is to see the vessels, and you can do it, but the museum do not add much more than that.

I've read about the museum beforehand and I thought it could be quite interesting, but actually it's way more impressive than I thought. It is about he story of a Norwegian that had built a raft to be able to prove his theory that ancient civilization left Peru and went all the way to some remote islands in the Pacific. The story is so great that got an Oscar for it's documentary in 1951 and recently there is a Norwegian movie about it as well. Quite impressive, definitely worth a visit!
