Enrich your tour of the city with a history lesson at Museo Nacional de Antropologia, one of Mexico's premier cultural institutions. Established in 1964, this comprehensive museum contains important artifacts from the country's pre-Columbian past. Major highlights include an Aztec stone calendar and a 16th-century statue of Xochipilli, Aztec god of art, games, flowers, and song. After you piece together Mexico's pre-Hispanic past, visit the upper display halls to learn how the country's indigenous cultures live today. Rent an audio guide at the entrance if you wish to explore on your own, or join one of the museum's free guided tours. Plan your visit to Museo Nacional de Antropologia and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Mexico City day trip website.

This is a must see place if you travel to Mexico city. A huge museum of beautiful architecture, with so many exhibitions of pre-columbian civilizations, such as Aztec, Maya and other indigenous... more »
Extremely interesting and beautiful place. There is a separate hall for each major culture. The similarities and distinctions between the cultures can be clearly seen in minute and large details. One needs at least a week to slowly digest all that is displayed here, and ideally prepare in advance. If you are in town for a couple of days, dedicate at least half a day for a quick walk through. There is a pretty good restaurant inside — so plan your trip.
Fantastic museum with a range of exhibits showcasing human and cultural evolution in the Americas. I came here off the back of a recommendation and was blown away by the scope and scale of the exhibits. I understand that this museum holds a lot of cultural significance for Mexico and a majority Spanish speaking population. My only negative takeaway was the lack of English plaques on a few exhibits. Some were better than others but I think in general they are a few steps short given some of the advertising alludes to a more accommodating experience for native English speakers. The main highlights of the Museum were the Aztec Sun Stone and the large Mushroom Fountain in the centre of the exhibit although the whole museum was filled with worthwhile exhibits. Admission was 80 pesos per adult. I would recommend setting a whole day aside and getting a guide at the front. If you go around without a guide, I'd recommend working your way around the exhibits in an anticlockwise fashion.
