The impressive structure was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578. The interior boasts intricately carved walls, a painted vaulted ceiling, and a marble floor made up of Knight's tombs. The cathedral's chapels are filled with elaborate riches and dedicated to the different patron saints of the Knights. Don't miss Caravaggio's masterpiece, "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" (1608) in the Oratory, for which it was commissioned. It was very interesting to learn about the history of Valetta, St John's Cathedraland the importance of it. The tour guide was great and knew her history. I enjoyed the day.

I was initially hesitant about paying €15 entrance fee, however I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The cathedral itself is very pretty inside, extremely opulent and just goes to show how profitable churches are. The audio guide is very interesting and takes you through 19 different areas of the cathedral offering history on the various sections and decor. One of the areas was closed for restoration so we couldn’t see that but we were able to go into all of the other areas. I hope the cathedral puts some of the profits towards local charities.

Unlike any other European church I've visited. Bit steep of an entry ticket at €15 (the rest of Malta is pretty reasonably priced) but worth a visit. Make sure you cover your shoulders & above the knee or you won't have an easy time getting in & will have to wear a cover up supplied by the church
