Considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering, Colosseum is the largest amphitheater in the world. This world-famous Roman landmark is one of the city's most visited attractions, so expect a long line and an even longer wait. Skip the long line for the general entry by joining a guided tour of the site or by booking your tickets online. Built of concrete and stone, the elliptical amphitheater was originally capable of seating some 50,000 spectators who came to watch animal fights and gladiatorial combats. Emperor Vespasian began the amphitheater project in 70 CE. It was completed during the reign of Titus about ten years later, measuring 48 m (157 ft) high, 188 m (617 ft) long, and 156 m (511 ft) wide. "I wanted to be there 2100 years ago" I just closed my eyes and my imagination flew 2100 years to the past, generally speaking. Our tour guide narrated almost everything we did not about about this historic monument. I remember asking him why were there some different color shades on the external walls and he told us, the clear ones were marble stones, those were the original stones. The Colosseum has been rebuilt through history, in fact some how it has been shortened. When we walked inside I was confused to see some sort of labyrinth, it did not make any sense to me at all. How was it possible for the gladiators to fight on a labyrinth, so I asked right away. Turns out, there used to be a floor on top of that labyrinth, this floor was covered with sand, and every time there was a fight and the sand got covered with the blood of the gladiators, it was easily removed and new one was placed. The floor rotted thought the years exposing the labyrinth. We saw the area were the emperor used to sit and a cross reminding all the Christians. This structure is simply beautiful and can be enjoyed better if a tour is bought with enough time because it is visited by thousands of tourists a day. If you are lucky, you might get a private tour to the underground which might be out of this world. Perhaps one of the areas I wanted to see the most was the road where the races used to take place. I remember those movies like Spartacus...I closed my eyes and could imagine the carriages racing while people were creaming a cheering for them.
