Underground Naples, Naples

#3 of 748 in Things to do in Naples
Must see · Historic Walking Area · Tourist Spot
See the other side (literally) of the city with Underground Naples, offering a chance to tour a place some 40 m (130 ft) below the historic center of Naples. This secret, underground city remains a world apart from what you see above ground--a network of tunnels, Greco-Roman aqueducts, and air raid shelters from World War II. The tour takes you on a journey through history and provides a look at the city's turbulent past, from the ancient until the modern times. Most of the passages you'll see during the evocative tour were originally cut by ancient Greeks, who extracted tufa stone from this site. Part of your excursion will take place by candlelight and will lead through some very narrow passages--keep that in mind if you don't like tight, dark spaces. • This is the 'official' Sotteranea in Centro, just past the north end of "Christmas Street", not the other one with the same name. Their advance booking system is poor, no indication of the tour...  more »
  • Terrible terrible company. I booked this trip and looked everywhere for an address. I even sent a message before the trip giving my mobile number and telling them where I would be (I googled the trip....  more »
  • Serious COVID Regulations Violation The tour itself was really neat, perhaps I expected to see a bit more but that's just myself having unrealistic expectations. The best part for me was actually the end of the tour that I don't want to spoil for the uninitiated. Our tour guide for the day was Eva. She was fantastic--knowledgeable, energetic, passionate, informative, and kind. My wife (non-native C1/2 level speaker) struggled to understand her accent a bit, but I didn't think it was that strong. Would definitely recommend going with her if you can. MAJOR RED FLAG! The main issue I had was the blatant COVID precautions violations by the tour that followed us. Eva was VERY clear about how masks should be properly worn and why the regulations are in place (which, if you can't follow, then stay home). However, the 4 o'clock French female tour guide on August 29 must have missed the COVID training session. Most of her group was wearing their masks on their chins (hope they get tested!) and the female tour guide would REMOVE HER MASK every time she stopped to speak. When I motioned to her to move her mask up she had the audacity to shush me. Eva told us that the powers that be actively read these reviews. If that is true and no action is taken, I would encourage ALL potential patrons to skip this tour entirely as it is not worth the risk that you are putting yourself in if management doesn't care.
  • Our English speaking guide, Eva, was very engaging, enthusiastic and informative. The experience in the subterranean tunnels is less scary and claustrophobic as we were warned it could be, definitely not extreme in any sense. Found quite fascinating the second part of the tour, visiting the relics of the ancient theatre currently within the existing homes of Neapolitans - a truly one of a kind condition that could only exist in a city such as Naples. Definitely recommend the tour for enriching your understanding of the city (or for simply saving yourself from the scorching temperatures, it’s pretty cool and humid down there).
