Square du Vert-Galant, Paris

#23 of 142 in Parks in Paris
From its very beginning, Square du Vert-Galant had a bit of a romantic reputation, named, as it was, for a prominent "vert-galant," or "lusty gentleman," of the time--King Henry IV. Henry was known for many things: being a Protestant who converted to Catholicism to ascend to the French throne; issuing the Edict of Nantes, which gave Protestants almost equal rights to Catholics; and having a bevy of mistresses well into his old age. Today a statue of Henry atop a horse keeps watch on the triangular park, which is often the sight of romantic picnics and marriage proposals. It's also the departure point for several boats that tour the Seine. • A must with the loved one(s). You will appreciate to wander around this place in order to really feel Paris...and from there: you can take a boat to cruise along the Seine river for an hour or so . Very romantic.
  • A nice park with views of the river. The park itself is clean and has some seats for relaxing with friends. Some parts of the stairs reak of urine but once in the park it is undetectable.
