Angkor Thom features the epic remains of the last "great city" of the Khmer Empire. Founded in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, the city was a true administrative, military, and religious center of the kingdom. The wooden structures have long collapsed, but the stone walls, five gates, and terraces adorned with elaborate carvings still remain, with some portions completely restored--such as the popular south gate. To approach this gate you need to walk through a moat between two rows of statues holding the seven-headed Naga (giant serpent)--symbolizing the passage from the world of people to the world of goods. A Buddhist temple sited at the center inside the walls represents the connection between heaven and earth. Do not miss the terrace decorated with elephant carvings where royal parties took place. Angkor Thom Reviews
One of the must visits whilst in Siem Reap. I booked as part of a Tuk-Tuk tour from my hostel. Try and arrive early to avoid the masses. more »
We hired a guide months before actually arriving in Siem Reap and WOW did it pay off. Plus it was a great price for just the 2 of us to be gone 10+ hours. Our Tour Guide Mr. Khemarin picked us up..... more »
Amazing walled city with gates facing the principal directions. It's filled with beautiful temples, artificial ponds, stone bridges and much more. You can easily spend a couple of days exploring this place. Take plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. It's going to be hot, sunny and dusty. Bucket list site.
You honestly have to be here an hour before sunrise if you want to capture it on video or photo. Otherwise, just arrive before sunrise for something truly magical. The entire complex is beautiful and rife with history. You can do many of the temple sites in a single day but it will be super rushed. If you have time, I think two days would be more enjoyable given how large this Angkor Wat is.
