Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park

#2 of 20 in Trails in Yosemite National Park
Replete with creeks, towering trees, and rolling stretches of grassland, Tuolumne Meadows offers an array of options for hiking, climbing, and exploring the great outdoors of Yosemite National Park. Leave your car at one of the many small parking lots spaced out along the main road and explore the area, which features sprawling meadows surrounded by densely forested areas and backdrop of granite hills and mountains. Hit the trail and wander the meadows' open expanses or swing by the visitor center for a map and more information about popular routes. Many visitors head for one of the many granite domes in the meadows and climb them for a panoramic view of the alpine scenery. • You get up to about 9000 feet, but it is sure worth it as you temperature drops about 20 degrees as compared to Yosemite Valley. Plenty of short or long hikes available.  more »
  • Amazing place. Available mostly for camping, so don't expect extra comfort - but definitely worth it.
  • A welcome respite from the hordes in Yosemite Valley. Flee from the other tourists, and explore the backcountry! Spectacular day hikes (Lembert Dome, Cathedral Peak, Lyell Canyon), overnights (Glen Aulin, Upper and Lower Cathedral Lakes) and weekend (Miller Lake) trips in all directions. Tip for John Muir Trail hikers: permitting from Tuolomne is much easier than Yosemite Valley. Hike northbound to YV (20 miles, all downhill), return to Tuolomne via YARTS bus, then continue southbound to Mt. Whitney.
