USS Pampanito, San Francisco

4.4
Step aboard USS Pampanito, a veteran Balao-class submarine that allows you to see how crews lived and worked aboard the vessel during the World War II. Constructed in 1943 to meet America's need for advanced submarines, the craft helped patrol shipping lanes in the Pacific theater and on several occasions engaged and sunk Japanese ships. Visit this National Register of Historic Places-listed museum/ship, and explore the corridors and tight spaces where her crew spent months at a time at sea. You'll find bunk beds, periscopes, the engine room, the torpedo tube, and more inside; many mechanisms are still in working condition today. • I really enjoyed my self-guided tour. The audio tour is complementary and you can move at your own pace.  more »
  • Is a North American submarine docked in San Francisco. He completed six war patrols between 1944 to 1945 and served as a Naval Reserve training ship from 1960 to 1971. It is now a national historic landmark, preserved as a memorial and Museum at the San Francisco Maritime national parks in Fisherman's Wharf. The Pampanito was turned into a memorial and Museum in San Francisco on November 21 1975, transferred to the Maritime Park Association (formerly National Maritime Museum Association) on 20 May 1976, and opened to the public on 15 March 1982. In 1986, Pampanito was listed on the national register of historic places and declared to be a national historic landmark, where is open to visits by U $20.00 per person.

  • Great for war/ WW2 history buffs in this historic submarine. Located close to fisherman's wharf/pier 39, getting here is no problem and not hard. Don't come here if you are claustrophobic or cannot climb steep ladders, since the quarters of the submarine are tight and can only be accessed by ladders. Audio guide is provided. Admission is included with Go San Francisco card.
  • This is a WW2 submarine with a really rich history. The tour isn't a very long one, but you learn a lot about life on the sub and thier missions. The museum docents and staff have done a phenomenal job of restoring and maintaining this boat, preserving a piece of living history. Definitely worth a visit if you're around Pier 39.
