San Francisco Zoo hosts gardens and habitats with over 1,000 animals from more than 250 species. Among numerous mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and invertebrates, you'll have a chance to see the largest colony of Magellanic penguins in captivity. You'll also have the chance to examine insect specimens under a microscope and observe a large selection of live arthropods, including centipedes, hissing cockroaches, termites, tarantulas, and bees. The zoo hosts exhibits of Africa and South America with their native animals, aviary, large cat, bear and primate centers, and a children's zoo with a feeding and petting farm. San Francisco Zoo Reviews
Not much there at all. Saw a couple of squirrels and birds but most of the displays were under construction or closed. Worst zoo ever! $5.50 for a 20oz coke! Outrageous price for everything there. No ... more »

For us, this zoo visit was that perfect contrast program, to the sometimes very strenuous sightseeing tours in San Francisco. So if you need some peace and quiet from San Francisco and want to get to know a wonderful destination for animal lovers, you can't get past the "San Francisco Zoo & Gardens." We visited this largest animal park in Northern California, with the "Hop-On/Hop-Off bus tours offered by" CitySightseeing, "saving us our own arrival and also parking fees. The zoo entrance is only a few meters away from the "P5" stop of the Park & Beach Tour "and is served every hour. With the time of 20$ admission (senior fare 17$), this zoo isn't too expensive either. We liked very well the Africa scene, which recreated the diverse majestic African savannah. But the Penguin Island, which is home to the largest colony of Magellan penguins outside the wilderness, is also worth seeing. In total, more than 2000 exotic, endangered and thus rescued animals representing more than 250 species are said to have found their new home here. The special thing about this zoo is that over time it has evolved from "animals in cages," mainly from "animals in natural environment." In addition to the many animals, there is also to the amusement of Jung & Alt, a historic steam locomotive (Little Puffer Train) that draws its circles in the zoo with lots of fanfare and clouds of steam. The hundred-year-old "Little Puffer" is an essential part of the history of the San Francisco Zoo and one of only three remaining 22-gauge steam locomotives in the world. We also treated ourselves to this fun and did a round with the famous little ball train. Summary: Not necessarily a highlight, for a sightseeing visit to San Francisco, but for those who need some rest, are here with children and like animals, for this group of people, we can definitely recommend the "San Francisco Zoo & Gardens," definitely.
We are members of both SF and Oakland zoos (We are a zoo nerd family), and this is our favorite Saturday place to go. We have a 3 year old and an infant and it is a great place to be outside. There is a great playground for kids of all ages. We usually park on Sloat street for free and then walk in. After the zoo we usually grab dinner at Java Beach Cafe and then walk down to the ocean. Unlike the Oakland zoo, SF zoo serves alcohol and you can buy beer or wine at almost any concession stand.
My kids and I love this zoo. Animals live in a big area. Lots of different areas for animals. There is beautiful place with pandas and giraffes. Also my kids love playground and farm. Every time you will find something new in this zoo. Amazing!
