San Francisco Zoo hosts gardens and habitats with over 1,000 animals from more than 250 species. Among numerous mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and invertebrates, you'll have a chance to see the largest colony of Magellanic penguins in captivity. You'll also have the chance to examine insect specimens under a microscope and observe a large selection of live arthropods, including centipedes, hissing cockroaches, termites, tarantulas, and bees. The zoo hosts exhibits of Africa and South America with their native animals, aviary, large cat, bear and primate centers, and a children's zoo with a feeding and petting farm. San Francisco Zoo Reviews
For SF being all righteous about so many things, they are certainly lacking with their zoo. Wolves in cages. Poor habitats. Depressing. If they can't have good homes for animals they need to find them... more »
As a huge animal lover, I’ve been to tons of different zoos. This one is a bit small but very nice and well set up. A little pricey. Seems to need some renovations to stay up to date. more »
One of the good zoos that we went in West coast. Only better one is San Diego. Very nice place to go to. Kids always love this. Need little more parking. Always loved variety of animals. Very difficult to cover all leasurely in a day. Better plan multiple visits if visiting with kids. Only thing they could have done is to add some aquarium in there :)
A great place to take your kids for an afternoon. The playground is especially nice and it's right in the middle of the park. The petting zoo, giraffes and gorillas are other favorites and they have special events at Christmas and Halloween. Only downside is the food: it's reasonably priced but not the highest quality. I recommend bringing your own food from outside. The playground has some picnic tables and a grassy area for putting down a blanket. EDIT (2018): They now have homemade pizza at the cafe near the zoo train. It's the only good food option in my opinion.
