San Francisco Zoo, San Francisco

San Francisco Zoo hosts gardens and habitats with over 1,000 animals from more than 250 species. Among numerous mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and invertebrates, you'll have a chance to see the largest colony of Magellanic penguins in captivity. You'll also have the chance to examine insect specimens under a microscope and observe a large selection of live arthropods, including centipedes, hissing cockroaches, termites, tarantulas, and bees. The zoo hosts exhibits of Africa and South America with their native animals, aviary, large cat, bear and primate centers, and a children's zoo with a feeding and petting farm. • For SF being all righteous about so many things, they are certainly lacking with their zoo. Wolves in cages. Poor habitats. Depressing. If they can't have good homes for animals they need to find them...  more »
  • As a huge animal lover, I’ve been to tons of different zoos. This one is a bit small but very nice and well set up. A little pricey. Seems to need some renovations to stay up to date.  more »
  • Truly lovely zoo. Many animals all in appropriate enclosures. The lemur exhibit was especially amazing with so many trees and activities for the lemurs who were definitely enjoying their space. We wen...  more »

  • One of the good zoos that we went in West coast. Only better one is San Diego. Very nice place to go to. Kids always love this. Need little more parking. Always loved variety of animals. Very difficult to cover all leasurely in a day. Better plan multiple visits if visiting with kids. Only thing they could have done is to add some aquarium in there :)
  • A great place to take your kids for an afternoon. The playground is especially nice and it's right in the middle of the park. The petting zoo, giraffes and gorillas are other favorites and they have special events at Christmas and Halloween. Only downside is the food: it's reasonably priced but not the highest quality. I recommend bringing your own food from outside. The playground has some picnic tables and a grassy area for putting down a blanket. EDIT (2018): They now have homemade pizza at the cafe near the zoo train. It's the only good food option in my opinion.
  • We enjoyed our day at the zoo, specially giraffe and gorilla exhibit and also the bears. Even though it was a cloudy day still the animals were active and kids had a great time. The zoo has a great variety of trees and plants and justifies it's name as gardens. It's at great location away from City and reaching there is easy. Good food choices, not too expensive parking and well maintained. Chimps and rhino we're a disappointment. They have enough big cats but those are always YMMV. Overall great for spending a day with family.
  • Great place for a family trip. It's a lot bigger than you think, we've gone twice and still haven't seen it all. Next time we're going to go the opposite way so we see what we missed. You can bring your own lunches which I recommend because food is expensive here and mostly pizza. They have a parking lot but you better get there early as it's pretty small. You pay for parking when you pay for entrance. Really awesome kids playground! There's three or four themed playgrounds
  • Awesome zoo right by the ocean! The couple of times we have been here it has been consistently cool and the breeze while under the shade can be cold. Otherwise with the walking and intermittent shade from the trees makes it the perfect temperature to visit the zoo. There are multiple places to eat, pizza is decent and so are the sandwiches. Prices are what you would expect at being at a venue like the zoo, we had no problems finding bathrooms and the staff were friendly. The animals are also what you would typically find at a large zoo (100 acres of land). There isn't a tram that brings you around like at the San Diego zoo but if you take a leisure pace it wont be a strenuous day. We look forward to coming back with the kids.
