Musee Mecanique, San Francisco

4.5
Experience the entertainment of the past at Musee Mecanique, while interacting with Ed Zelinsky’s personal collection of 20th-century penny arcade games, music boxes, photo booths, and other coin-operated wonders. The museum pays homage to this impressive assortment that he began at the age of 11 and continued to add to throughout his life. Now grown to hundreds of antique machines, it is one of the largest of its type in the world. Although entrance is free, be sure to bring your spare change so you can try your luck out on some of the games. • This was one of the absolute highlights - got to play a bunch of my old favourites while also checking out some crazy vintage coin operated machines. I could have spent most of the day here.  more »

  • Very curious and free admission, Museum full of machines recreational steeped in history, very ancient times, where you can play them for a little dindero. If these are the area would be a good addition to your tourist route.

  • Super cool place packed with lots of old arcade games. The games are super cheap but still really fun. My wife and I had a great time there playing and looking at all the different entertainment from the past. It also seemed like a fun place to bring your kids. Entrance is free, which is another plus.
  • I consider this an absolutely mandatory stop for most visitors to Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39. It's off the main street but its a great experience. I occasionally have family visit from out of town and I typically plan at least an hour at Musée Mécanique. It's unique blend of SF history and interactive fun is usually a hit, and $10 goes a long, LONG way (unlike most other attractions in the area).
  • This is the go-to place in Fisherman's Wharf and is really the only reason I go there. You can easily and happily spend $20 on the old arcade games you played as a child; it is a lot of fun showing younger kids the old games. The antique games are quite a bit of fun and the very antique dioramas are well worth a few extra quarters here and there. This is my top recommendation for things to do with kids on SF.
  • This was a lot of fun to go to!!! There's a lot of Carnival games that were very interesting to go to. It's a place that can be fun for the whole family (8 years+). All the attractions are around $1. Drop by if you're around!
  • Absolutely LOVE this place. A Must visit of places in San Francisco. Being a gamer from the 70's I Really appreciate the collection of machines put together here. I also love the old piano/orchestra machines, the strongarm sideshow man (disappointed that they put a padded glove on his hand though!!), and the history that is in this place. Don't leave San Francisco without visiting. You won't be disappointed.
