Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco

Explore the neighborhood known for its history of hippie culture that now hosts a variety of hip cafes, clothing boutiques, independent bookstores, and more. Also called the Haight or the Upper Haight, Haight-Ashbury is the perfect place to get a feel for the 1960s subculture that once defined the city. The neighborhood grew in popularity when North Beach became too expensive for bohemians, and was home to the likes of the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and other rock legends. You can still pick up plenty of tie-dye and incense, and no visit to the neighborhood would be complete without wandering the aisles of a record shop. Stroll the streets, taking in the counterculture that is still visible, admire the murals and Victorian houses, pop into a coffee shop to people-watch, or catch some live music. Our San Francisco online trip planner makes visiting Haight-Ashbury and other San Francisco attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • The Haight-Ashbury is a sensory immersion. It's a one-of-a-kind place on Earth. there is a ton of history here, so it wouldn't hurt to watch a few YouTube videos about the Summer of Love, hippie movem...  more »
  • Despite waiting a little more of the place, I recommend meeting you for the history you have. I expected a little more of the shops, despite having interesting places not seen every day, but did not come to captivate me so much (I created expectations). I did not find it so peaceful to walk the main street, because unfortunately (by the situation of people) there are enough homeless and drug users. I particularly enjoyed the moment I left the main and walked the streets in the surroundings, which are much quieter and with many beautiful houses (as in almost all SFO)!
