Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

4.8
One of the most photographed structures in the world, Golden Gate Bridge is the first feature of San Francisco you'll see when driving in from the north. Opened in 1937, the structure boasted the longest suspension bridge main span until 1964. Still considered one of the world's greatest engineering feats, the bridge draws visitors with its numerous vantage points, from which you can see and photograph the picturesque bay and boats passing under the iconic structure's red towers. The bridge has sectioned-off pathways on each side for both pedestrians and cyclists, so you can take your time crossing and admiring the views. Though the bridge closes for pedestrians at night. • We were very fortunate that our childhood friend from school days decided to drive us around Nevada (Hoover Dam), Arizona (Grand Canyon), California (LA, Lemoore, Yosemite, Placerville, San Mateo, San...  more »
  • Is much better than in what has been seen in movies and photos. Without a doubt visit is mandatory.

  • If you arrive and you see the Golden Gate Bridge and that there is no mist... run... hurry you, since this will not last long like this... in 4 days in the month of August we have managed barely 1 h to see the Golden Gate Bridge without mist... We have been disappointed. We favor was on the bridge to cross but the misfortune... cohabitation bike and pedestrian is not very pleasant on the small sidewalk to cross the bridge. There was always a bike into the Nice great legs... But good structure so imposing and beautiful that we were happy like to have seen at least once in our life

  • Golden Gate Bridge would be the most beautiful and the most photographed bridge in the world. Such admirable is its beauty. It was a nice experience walking over the bridge that links the American city of San Francisco to Marin County. Pedestrians including wheelchair users and bicyclists can go on the sidewalks of the bridge during daylight hours but roller blades, skateboards and roller skates are not permitted. There are vista points on both north and south sides of the bridge with parking lots. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
  • My experience walking across Golden Gate was AMAZING! The architecture and design of the bridge was magnificent, and my experience walking the whole bridge was breathtaking! It will very likely be windy and chilly, so be prepared for that, but aside from that the views and everything were spectacular! Seeing the bridge up close is already mind blowing, but actually walking the bridge is a different experience. We even saw a gigantic cargo ship and some whales while walking! Also, a quick note, use the bathroom before walking, because it would suck to want to use it in the middle of the bridge. Definitely MUST go if you have not seen the bridge before, because seeing the bridge with the mist and fog is an experience you can NOT miss!
  • The Golden Gate Bridge is a technical masterpiece that can only be described in superlative terms. When the bridge was completed in 1937 it was the world's longest and tallest suspension bridge. But above all this masterly example of engineering is a magnificent monument set against a beautiful backdrop. Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge started in 1933. The bridge, which was designed by engineer Joseph Strauss was built to connect San Francisco with Marin County across the 1600 meter (+5000ft) wide strait known as the Golden Gate which links the San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. The dimensions of the bridge defied all imagination. The total length of the bridge is 8,981ft or 2,737 m. The main span between the two enormous towers is 4,200 ft or 1,280 meters long, making the Golden Gate Bridge the world's largest suspension bridge, a record that would stand until 1964 when the Verrazano-Narrows bridge in New York was completed. The two beautiful Art Deco towers are almost 820ft or 250 meters tall, of which more than 20 meters is below the sea level. The road, six lanes and 90 ft / 27m wide is an amazing 220 ft or 67 meters above the water level. It is supported by enormous cables, anchored in hundreds of bars locked into concrete blocks with a pulling power of 25 million kg. The two cables have a total length of 2,332 meters and a diameter of 90 centimeters. They are woven from 27,572 threads of steel with a total length that equals three times the earth's circumference.
  • A truly beautiful American landmark. The entire area has breathtaking views of the bay. Definitely either walk or bike over the bridge (1.2 miles each way) and visit the welcome center for info, history & interactive displays. Note that you're walking on the side of a highway so there's fast traffic passing you which can be loud. Bring a jacket and hood/hat for the wind.
  • Awesome place. Must visit palace in San Francisco. What a wonderful piece of history. Architecture at it's best. Highly recommended. A walk on the bridge will an experience as well. Even try for bike ride. Don't miss it in evening time.
