Located inside a landmark building designed by architect A. Page Brown in the Beaux Arts style, Ferry Building Marketplace takes up the entire ground floor, the former baggage handling area of a ferry terminal. At its completion in 1898, this building was the largest project ever undertaken in the city. Today, the marketplace attracts foodies from around the country with its small shops selling everything from expensive mushrooms and sourdough bread to award-winning wines, cheeses, and chocolate cupcakes. The plaza just outside the building hosts local farmers and merchants selling organic produce grown in the area, as well as fast foods like burgers, pizzas, and tacos. Don't miss a stop at one of the marketplace restaurants, serving fresh seafood dishes and signature cocktails. Caught the ferry to Sausalito from here and when we arrived back had a look through the ferry building. Full of eateries and craft stalls it was a great way to spend an hour. more »

A great place to have lunch or brunch. You should definitely visit on Tuesdays and Saturdays, bc. that's when they have the Farmers Market open. During that time you can get great vegetables/fruits, which cost less than what you would pay at wholefoods. It's a great place to go for family outings, or to take a date. Plus the view is miraculous and you can also pay to ride the ferry. So have fun.
We were really surprised as to the variety and assortment of delicacies in this upscale market hall. From mushrooms to coffee to chocolate our eyes and appetite were both very satisfied. The Hog Island Oyster bar and restaurant was the pinnacle of our visit and taste experience. Next time we are in S.F. we are absolutely going back!
