Cable Car Museum, San Francisco

4.6
A free museum, Cable Car Museum gives visitors a peek inside the history of cable cars. Several cable cars are on display, as well as a few exhibits. Be sure to check out the viewing platforms in the power station. After viewing the power station from above, descend into the cavern at the junction of Washington and Mason streets, where the cables are routed. The power station is the working hub of the cable cars and still maintains the daily runs. Put Cable Car Museum into our San Francisco journey planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • What a wonderful part of San Fran history. Congrats for keeping this history alive. Loved seeing the working cables. Loved seeing the oldest cable car in the world and the photo viewing machines.  more »
  • More than a Museum, I would call this a visit to the heart of the whole system of the cablecar. With free entry sign in the huge Hall where coordinates all ropes of road system cablecar citizen. To see!

  • Super cool! Definitely check it out! You get to see the motors that drive the cables. The museum isn't huge but super informative. The gift shop is pretty awesome! I'm not a gift-shop person but the items and prices were great! The baseball caps are some of my favorites and only $7.99!
  • Loved it, free to get in and if you like history this is a fun place to learn something. Or even to entertain yourself for a while in between events. As it is a museum it tends to be less interactive and more of just a viewing and reading place. So if you have kids that get easily bored I wouldn't bring them. However, if your kids like to learn new things, and see how something works it's really cool, a great example of human ingenuity for the time. The fact that it still works is an example of how well it still runs and works.
  • Actually a very compact and quick museum experience. The visit is completely free and you can see the end of the line for the cables for four different nearby streets Hyde, California, Mason, and Powell. There are wooden castings for metal cable car parts, a slightly dated but informative video experience with cable car seats, and an overhead view of the currently operational motors.
  • To better understand how the cable car works, this is a must to go. Even better knowing it’s free. The GE motors that drives the cable lines are impressive. From the main entrance, don’t hesitate to go downstair. You will have a good view of how the cables looks like under the road.
  • What can I say, it's free ! It's a look back in time to the rich history of our beloved city. The museum is full of historic equipment and cable cars from years gone by. They have a beautiful little gift shop and there is some nice dinning options near by. Plan for a few hours to take in this little jewel.
