At Aquarium of the Bay, more than 20,000 animals are cared for, including approximately 50 sharks of different species. Aquatic animals from San Francisco Bay and its neighboring waters are kept in a range of different satellite tanks and one main tank that features 91 m (300 ft) of underwater tunnels. You'll have an opportunity to touch bat rays, skates, leopard sharks, sea stars, and sea cucumbers. The aquarium offers behind-the-scenes tours as well, where you'll witness how animals are cared for, or feed sharks and other fish. Very simple in general
I love aquariums and have been to many. This one wasn't great but it wasn't awful. I do not think it is worth the admission price though -we had city passes so it was worth it for us to go. We spent a... more »
This aquarium is nice and has some great displays, but is one of the more expensive that I have gone to so far. One good thing though, is that your ticket is good for all day and you can reenter. Also, they offer a AAA discount and other discounts as well if you are interested. Research the city pass they try to sell you in advance to see if you will really use everything they offer you on the deal before buying. It is conveniently l located near Pier 39 where all the waterfront sites are along with all the usual tourist traps, so it is something definitely to do if in the area. Warning! If you are not a fan of kids, there are lots of kids. You might plan your time there either first thing in the morning or later in the day when less traffic and then you can enjoy the exhibits with a little more peace and quiet. The jelly fish exhibits are amazing and fascinating. You can just stare at them for hours if given the opportunity. However the walking tubes with fish swimming around is breath taking as stingrays, sharks, and other large ocean fish swim next and over you. For a fun aspect, the river otters will give you lots of laughs and smiles. To me it felt like there wasn't as much education and science associated with this aquarium as I have experienced at others, but fun all the same.
Super fun! While the aquarium seems small at first, the tour seems well worth it, especially if you can catch one of the feeding times. Don't miss the chance to take pictures of the jellies, they're gorgeous. The staff is super attentive and knowledgeable. The otters are adorable too...
