Museum Mile, New York City

One day a year, seven of the country's finest museums, all ones that call Fifth Avenue home, collectively open their doors for free to New Yorkers and visitors for a mile-long block party and visual art celebration.

This traffic-free, music and art-filled celebration fills the street and sidewalks of Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th Street, the mile now officially designated as Museum Mile.

  • I was lucky enough to go one afternoon that 7 of the 10 museums were free, of course it was impossible to visit them all, but if I enjoyed the bands, musical groups and activities along that mile on 5th Avenue. It was spectacular and I also visited the Jews Museum where an Expo on Leonard Cohen was exhibited

  • This "museum route" is not very short, in fact, it is 2km long. I haven't visited them all, but I think the most important ones are the famous Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper-Hewittt Smithsonian Design Museum. I do not recommend entering the MET, it is a museum quite classic for us Italians, which we are used to museums like the Vatican ones. I was disappointed because of this, it's "the usual museum", which the other museum exhibitions in NYC are not.
