Governors Island National Monument, New York City

Home to centuries-old fortifications and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Governors Island National Monument today provides a great deal of New York's military history as well as a green space close to the city. The island a little more than 730 m (2,395 ft) from the end of Manhattan and 365 m (1,200 ft) from Brooklyn, yet its 70 ha (172 acres) of parkland, public spaces, and facilities lend an air distinctly separate from the nearby hustle and bustle. Explore the island and its two large fortifications--the star-shaped Fort Jay and circular Castle Williams--which date from the American Revolution and turn of the 19th century, respectively. A guided tour of the island offered by the park service gives you an overview of the area's history in an approximately 2.4 km (1.5 mi) loop. Be sure to check the service's online schedule to see when tours and monument access are available. Governors Island National Monument is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, New York City Edition.

  • Every summer this is a must visit for me. I bring lunch (though some good eats can be found on site) and a book. After a nice stroll, which is even better now because you can do a complete circle arou...  more »

  • Governors island is the real out of new York that so close to New York. Been here many times, always had the best time. Just the history of it already makes a place worth visiting. The place is special, relaxed, and has a lot to offer. There are many special places in NYC, but this one is something else. Read many of the reviews written here, agree with most. There is something about it.
  • It's a beautiful place full of history. It's almost like time just stopped here and not too long ago. We walked all around and looked inside the buildings through the windows. It reminds me of being on base, but fondly. I went with my family and we rented a Surrey bike. We rode all around and stopped a few times to take pictures and check out some interesting spots. The ferry ride over was really short and you can bring your own bike if you want. There's an outdoor food court right near the bike rental and there is a good variety of food choices. It was a lot of fun and we spent most of the day there.
