This memorial was originally commissioned by Chief Henry Standing Bear in 1948 and has yet to be completed. The monument is located in the Black Hills, a land sacred to Lakota culture, only 27 km (17 mi) away from Mount Rushmore. • Your body dumbed down at the sight of this monument! Once you have heard the history behind this, we are a tourist on a mug!

  • The cost to enter the monument was $30 per carload, all for access to a "viewing platform" that you a view not much better than you would get from the road. If you want to get up closer to the monumen...  more »
  • In my opinion this work does not end it in the life of many generations, with having it is visited and therefore charge and for them it is enough.

  • I only spent an hour or two there. This was about a year ago. One thing that I took away from it was, an hour or two is just not enough time there. There's so much stuff there. I'm hoping to go back soon, and spend pretty much an entire day there. It was a very moving, and Powerful experience. I really enjoyed it!
  • Great view, wonderful planning, and a free rock gift with every donation. I named my rock Gary who proudly guards the front porch while I'm away, as a good rock always does. Anyway, At night the crazy horse memorial puts on a free light show. The whole memorial was absolutely stunning and I'm glad to have been able to attend they have great plans for that memorial. As I'm native American I was granted free access however it's normally a paid enterence. I'm so happy to have the the carving made. Plus this memorial is located near mount Rushmore and it gives you the perfect chance to see both memorial. Best of traveling to you.
  • Our 3rd visit in 15 years and enjoyed it every time. Hope to live long enough to see it finished! I love to see the monument from the highway. Our grandkids enjoy the free rocks and Native American presentations. We always enjoy Laughing Water restaurant. Good food at good prices. We specially like anything with Indian fried bread.
  • Many times a visitor - the excitement still builds as I drive through the forest of ponderosa pines - and there it is - a piece of art on a crazy scale. Something so significant that it is almost heart stopping to appreciate the commitment and vision in carving out this memorial to a great people. For a family to commit three generations to this endeavour is unique. Keep up the great work.
  • Amazing structure if completed. The sun rays settle over Crazy Horse as perfection... Pity the monument is incomplete. The film was disappointing because it didn’t share much insight on Crazy Horse. The gift shop was mainly tourist type items such as magnets, post cards and some beaded jewelry. Although the Salsa by Char, the taffy and caramels were great as gifts for family and friends there was much left to be desired. Overall, happy to stop by and nix off our list while in SD.
