Immerse yourself in South Carolina's history and culture at South Carolina State Museum, the largest museum in the Southeastern United States. The old Columbia Mills building housing the museum is an artifact in itself, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982. Explore the collection, which is divided into four themes: natural history, technology and science, culture, and art. Look for highlights including the first locomotive built in America, the Best Friend of Charleston, and the H.L. Hunley--the first submarine to sink a rival ship in battle. View exhibits commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Confederate relic room, and displays about the state's car manufacturing industry. Stop by the digital dome planetarium and the 4-D interactive theater for shows, or head to the observatory to look at the sun and stars through one of four telescopes. This is an absolute must-see in Columbia, SC. From the friendly staff to the well-designed displays, I was impressed with the museum. My children were impressed too, which was neat. They enjoyed the variety of information. The four floors are clean, beautiful, and well organized. Our family will definitely return there for another cultural day, and I have already recommended it to our friends.
What an interesting museum. The presentation of the history of the Conderate army and what everyone had to endure during this time was so very interesting. Their are old uniforms and swords from different commanding officers. Clothing from the past of what women would wear and the history of how women who stayed behind what they did to help during the war. Maps of where the troops were stationed at and in what states. Then the display progresses into modern day military and their uniforms to what these units did during the war. There were uniforms from WW1 and their equipment that they used to the Vietnam era to Afghanistan and all wars in between. Admission is not that expensive to see but it is a well put together document display of what happens during the wars American have fought.
