Shedd Aquarium, Chicago

4.1
#1 of 14 in Zoos & Aquariums in Illinois
Shedd Aquarium contains over 1,500 different species, including fish, marine mammals, birds, snakes, amphibians, and insects. Opened in 1930, this venue was the first inland aquarium with a permanent saltwater fish collection. Located within walking distance of the city's natural history museum and planetarium, the aquarium draws over 2 million annual visitors. Highlights include an oceanarium designed to replicate the natural conditions of the waters off the northwestern coast of the U.S., containing beluga whales, white-sided dolphins, sea otters, and seals. You can also visit the shark exhibit, a replica of a Philippines reef ecosystem. Exhibits often sell out early in the morning, so ensure your entry by purchasing your tickets well in advance. • This place is very close to the Field Museum. It is a nice building and the plan is ideal for families with children. Very interesting are the exhibits: huge fish, seahorses, ornamental fish, a beluga whale and a sea lion, are part of what visitors can see on their tour. The penguins and the dolphins deserve a special mention as they are the protagonists of a half-hour presentation. The dolphins can be seen swimming first in their tank and then in the display of jumps and pirouettes they do with their trainers.

  • Huge aquarium with so many different exhibits. We went here on a weekend so the lines were super long to get in but they did move fast. The aquarium is huge with so many different exhibits and detailed information about each. The staff is also around and are very helpful if you have any questions. If you have a city pass, you get discounted rates to enter. You can easily spend couple of hours here. Highly recommend.
  • I love the Shedd. It's an amazing place with a lot of cool animals and knowledgeable staff who are very passionate about animal welfare and conservation. The dolphin show that they do is really exceptional and educational too. It's one thing to see a dolphin in a book or on TV, but it's entirely different to see them up close and and performing a lot of their natural behaviors inside. There's also great underwater viewing for the belugas. They're one of my favorite animals, and it's amazing to see them so up close.
