Middleton Place once housed several generations of the Middleton family, including Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Now the plantation, which was built in 1755, has been named a National Historic Landmark and serves as a museum. Perhaps most impressively, the plantation is home to the oldest landscaped gardens in America, where the staff takes care to ensure that there is always something in bloom year round. Enjoy U.S. history amid these tranquil gardens. Take a tour of the house, get a glimpse of colonial life by visiting the stable yards, or ask about guided kayak tours or horseback riding to see the grounds from a different angle. We almost skipped Middleton Place for lack of time but held back for an extra morning...and are so glad we did. Where Magnolia is a wild and free garden...a little messy in a gorgeous relaxed way...Mi... more »
We enjoyed our plantation visit, but with slightly mixed feelings. The plantation itself is quite lovely and very well-maintained; the grounds are immaculate and some of the views are very pretty. The... more »
What a fun day at Middleton Place! It was hot but the beauty of the gardens and the shade it offered, helped us to forget! The house was beautiful and the history behind it is just so interesting!! The barns had people there explaining things, making pottery, blacksmithing, etc. The animals we fun too see and the kids loved that. Definitely give yourself a few hours so you can really relax, walk around and enjoy it! Grab a bottle of water on your way in at the outdoor store in the parking lot!
A beautiful garden in very well kept condition. The landscape is fantastic, the gardens reminiscent of the European royal gardens with a unique Southern flavor. (Watch out for alligators, I am not kidding). The only thing missing are signposts. Small little numbers at grass level simply does not suffice. Kids welcome.
