With its massive dome punctuating the London skyline, St. Paul's Cathedral is one of the city's most distinct sights. Both visually and ceremonially significant, the cathedral has hosted the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill, and Margaret Thatcher, and the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Climb to the top of the dome, pausing in the Whispering Gallery to hear murmurs from 30 m (100 ft) away, before walking up 271 more steps for panoramic views of London from the Golden Gallery. Head down to the crypt to view the tombs of national heroes, such as Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington. Learn about the cathedral's history in Oculus, a 270-degree film exhibit. For more information about the venue's detailed mosaics, paintings, and architecture, take a guided tour or pick up a touchscreen multimedia guide at the entrance. After touring the cathedral, you can enjoy traditional English tea in the Restaurant at St. Paul’s. When I used to think of London I always pictured Tower Bridge or Buckingham Palace, but I had no idea this cathedral was such an iconic building that stands up with the other famed places along the London skyline. Frankly, I found it to be more interesting and impressive then even Westminster Abbey. You are provided a small touchscreen video device with headphones so you can learn about the building and its history. I found the information helpful, but I would've liked more depth on the art in the building.St. Paul's Cathedral is one of the old, historic, beautiful churches located in the British capital, with its history dating back to 1675
Wonderful place. So much to see and take in. Great view from the top of the dome, although it fair near killed me getting up there. Well worth it though. The video installation art at the rear of the cathedral really made me stop to think. Very powerful and in no way an intrusion in such a space. You could spend all day in there. You can book a tour which I would recommend: There is an audio/visual tour which is free of charge but there is so much information it is hard to get your head around it. I think the tour would give a visit some focus. You could always have a wander round after. I also advise visitors to go early so that at least part of the visit could be crowd free, relatively speaking. There is a nice little souvenir shop and cafe in the crypt. The highlight of my visit to London.
