National Gallery houses one of the world's best collections of western European art. You can find larger collections at other galleries, but the roughly 2,300 paintings here comprehensively cover major art movements from the 13th to the 19th centuries. You'll encounter numerous important works, such as Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors, Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and Constable's The Haywain. Take a floor plan as soon as you enter the gallery, and consider picking up a free audio guide that explains the significance of the works you'll see. A handful of different themes are available, including the Collection Tour, which provides commentary on more than 1,000 works, and a 60-minute tour of the highlights. The British public owns the art in the permanent exhibit, so admission is free. Temporary exhibits, however, have fees. The gallery also offers three venues for food and drink. National Gallery Reviews
So much to see. The thing I love best is that the guards are so knowledgeable about the artwork. Talk to the guards. more »
The National Gallery contains more than 2,000 Western European paintings, dating from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. My wife and daughter thoroughly enjoyed their visit of this gallery. more »
Has to be my favourite gallery in the whole world! No greater collection than this. I'm happy that you're now allowed to take photos inside too. I can now photograph and enjoy details that cannot be see in pictures in books or on the web.
I wish I could live here. The building itself is gorgeous. Doors, walls, frames, marble, everything here is beautiful to look at. The painting are stunning, and several pieces caught my eyes and imagination. Even if you are not into painting, coming here is a lovely experience and will give you an insight into what was, is and seeing it all portrayed in these walls is just mind-blowing. This place is a must see. Trust me.
