Calanais Standing Stones, Isle of Lewis

Ancient history and mysticism beckon at Calanais Standing Stones, a late Neolithic stone ring. Appreciate this rare opportunity to connect with our remote ancestors and revel in the dramatic backdrop of the brown hills of Great Bernera and Loch Roag’s blue-gray waters. Excavations have revealed that the ring was set up between 2900 and 2600 BCE, and its layout is believed to have an association with astronomical events. Local tradition attributes the stones to giants who lived on the island; refusing to be converted to Christianity by Saint Kieran, they were supposedly turned into stone as punishment. Visit the Calanais Centre for more insights into the stones and their significance. • A stop at the Standing Stones is recommended. What surprised us is that you have access to this place at all times and no one pays attention to how the stones are handled. Downstairs there is a Visitor Center, but if you go up to the hill, there is a small parking lot right next to the stones, from there, access is also granted. We stayed overnight in this little place, was great. The next morning we were the first and had the stones for ourselves... very great

  • Very interesting place. Wet and misty when I was there so not great views, though very atmospheric. Each stone seems to have its own personality - beautiful to look at and touch. Fascinating exhibit on the area and the stones (at a charge) and a lovely cafe.
  • Good site, a bit wet but if you're careful damage minimal. Excellent images to be had at dawn... lost most of mine due to SD card fail. Hope you have better luck. Well worth a visit.
