See the vast and impressive collection of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine works at Istanbul Arkeoloji Muzesi, one of the world's largest museums, featuring over one million pieces. This also happens to be the oldest in Turkey, as it opened to the public in 1891. The artifacts are housed in three different buildings that make up the complex: the main building, or Archaeological Museum, Museum of the Ancient Orient, and Museum of Islamic Art. A great place to discover the Archaeological history of the region. Covers Egypt, Babylon, Roman times and more. A great selection. Translations in Turkish and English. Usually a small queue, half an hour or so. Make sure to check which sections are closed off before going in to avoid disappointment. Bonus points, find the kittens.
Quite an interesting museum. As others have said, it's undergoing much needed updates so some areas are closed. When we visited, the Alexander sarcophagus was on full display. It is truly something to behold and worth the visit if you are interested in ancient sculpture. The audio guide wasn't available during our visit and signage was not adequate to make up for it. It's a shame because these amazing relecs of human history deserve better.
