Trip Planner: Asia / Thailand / Chiang Mai Province / Mae Taeng / Bua Thong Waterfalls (Nam Phu Chet Si)
Situated just an hour’s drive from the city, Bua Thong Waterfalls (Nam Phu Chet Si) showcases a natural limestone waterfall, renowned for its visually appealing and unusual aesthetics, particularly the way sunlight dapples and splits in the area, creating awe-inspiring rainbows. The spot contains quite a few convenient and beginner-friendly climbing spots, thanks to the mineral coating which makes the surface surprisingly non-slippery. Be sure to ask locals, or do your own research on how to get here beforehand, as there there’s not a lot of signs marking the route to the waterfall. Be sure to bring towels, as you'll likely get wet. Bua Thong Waterfalls (Nam Phu Chet Si) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Mae Taeng Edition.

I recommend renting a scooter from Chaing Mai so that your journey to the falls is an experience. It will take you at least an hour and half but is a cool ride, and makes the day more fun than going b... more »

The waterfall is something special if you can go down and go up/climb in the warm water. But beware: the slippery path is really slippery! You're not lonely there, but at least you don't have to queue for the little way. By the way, there is also a path to the forest with a few branching paths at the source... when you want to be a little more lonely and enjoy the green of nature.
So much fun scrabbling up and down these waterfalls. Easy way to spend a few hours outside Chang Mai. Especially good for children, my son is 5 and made it easily on his own, there were younger kids doing it too. I carried my 8month old up in her carrier without issue. Bit slippery in a couple of places but very easy to spot where once you know what to look for. Can also recommend the rotisserie chicken at the top (you definitely build up an atmosphere), would also bring snacks and drinks though as options are limited that aside. On the way out of the park 500m up the road there is a Wat with a huge Buddha and a lot of bats inside a cave that are also worth visiting.
Otherworldly series of waterfalls in a spectacular, lush setting. If this place had been preplanned and built to specifications, it wouldn't be as perfect as it is. Water slides evenly across beige, smooth rocks that are somehow not at all slippery. It seems like you can simply walk straight up a 45 degree incline without sliding off. Verdant jungle and flowers fringe the edges of these natural falls. We did unfortunately notice two or three, massive spiders, no less than five inches across, hanging just 12 feet over the centre of the main falls. We kept going, but when we pointed them out, it was enough to make a British couple turn around. Beautiful despite the bugs. The most scenic afternoon we spent in Chiang Mai so far.
