Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
On the 2nd (Sun), pause for some serene contemplation at Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and then examine the collection at State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace. Keep things going the next day: see the interesting displays at State Russian Museum, browse the exhibits of St. Isaac's Cathedral State Museum-Memorial, then contemplate the long history of Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad), and finally tour the pleasant surroundings at Kirov Central Park of Culture and Recreation.

One of Poland's oldest cities, Krakow sits at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, its historical town center nestled on the left bank of the Vistula River.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Wed): contemplate the long history of Wawel Cathedral, see the interesting displays at Oskar Schindler's Factory, then explore the fascinating underground world of Wieliczka Salt Mine, and finally enjoy some diversion at Gokarting Center.
