#6 of 163 in Museums in Rome
Once a Jesuit seminary and a military hospital, Museo Nazionale Romano - Palazzo Massimo alle Terme contains a huge collection of mosaics and Roman statuary. This building is one of four national museums spread across the city, and a ticket purchased here will allow you entry into the other three venues as well. The basement of this particular building contains a sizable numismatic collection, showing the evolution of Italian currency over the ages. The upper floors are devoted to sculptures created between the second century BCE and first century CE. The displays explore themes of Hellenistic influences on Roman art and the development of the portraiture of the emperors. The top floor accommodates a collection of wall frescoes and pavement mosaics, most notably including those that were once used as decoration in elite Roman residences. Tickets can be purchased by phone or at the entrance into the site.  With our custom trip planner, Rome attractions like Museo Nazionale Romano - Palazzo Massimo alle Terme can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Even my teenagers loved this museum! There were two levels of statues and then a level of Roman houses. We loved the mosaic floors. This museum wasn't as crowded as many other attractions in Rome...  more »
  • This was one of the highlights of our Roman holiday. We visited early in the morning when there were only a few people, and it was amazing. The exhibition is well organised taking you on a journey...  more »

  • Quite simply one of the very best museums in Rome. The collection of ancient statues is one of the best in the world, highlights include a full statue of Augustus from his lifetime, the discus thrower and the bronze boxer. Similarly, the frescoes from the Villa of Livia is the best and most complete example of ancient painting I've ever seen
  • More chok full of Imperial art and Imperial Roman interior design than the Capitoline Museum. An absolute must see. If you have even 2 hours between trains at Termini just run over here!!! It took me a whole day to see. Entire painted roman villa rooms, complete floor tiles and statues of Marcus Aurelius and family.....all here!
