Get a sense of the city when it was the capital of the Western Roman Empire by stepping inside Basilica San Lorenzo Maggiore, the oldest church in Milan, dating back to the 4th century. Visit the Chapel of St. Aquilinus to view ancient Byzantine mosaics. Find the sarcophagus in the chapel said to hold the body of Galla Placidia, daughter of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. Follow the stairs behind the altar to see pieces of the original foundation, built with materials taken from an old Roman amphitheater. • I always try to visit as many old buildings and basilicas as I can when I'm in Europe. This basilica is no different. I actually stumbled upon this as I was putzing around Milan, like the lost tourist...  more »
  • This basilica is one of the oldest in Milan, still having in front of it a series of columns from the Roman era of when Trajan ruled. Inside it you can find incredible frescoes from different eras but above all a copy of Da Vinci's Last Supper made by one of his apprentices. If you didn't see the last supper you can always contemplate this even if it's not the big play. In addition, admission is completely free.

  • This stunning church at the center of the city is well worth the stop. Inside, some amazing 14th and 15th century paintings, an amazing architecture and absolutely wonderful altarpiece. This Basilica is certainly worth a visit, as is the Diocesan Museum attached and behind the church. Lots of interesting art -- both modern and old.
