Monkey Temple (Galta Ji), Jaipur

2.9
At Monkey Temple (Galta Ji), see how thousands of devotees complete their pilgrimage by bathing in the temples' sacred water tanks, or kunds. When you reach this holy place, ascend the crevasse, pass the highest water pool, and head toward the hilltop temple from which you can take in views of the entire valley. Notice how each temple features a number of pavilions with ornamented rounded roofs, intricately carved pillars, and painted walls. Visit the natural spring from which waterfalls pour down into seven pools used for sacred rituals. Friendly monkeys inhabit the place, but take care of your personal belongings, since they have a knack for theft. To plan Jaipur vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.

  • The temple has 4 levels: the first in its entrance is flanked by two monasteries whose monks will invite you to visit them for a Modica donation. We did not have much time because we incorporated this visit to the tour in a negotiation with our driver, and that is why we continue long. The next level has a large pond and there begins the habitat of the monkeys. It was an Indian winter with 22 º Celsius and they were cold, so it was not possible to see them swimming in the large pool, as if it happens in the summer. A few more steps and we found a very crowded small pond where the men bathe despite the very low temperature of the water. And finally a fourth level where there is a smaller pond even where they do their aquatic acrobatics the monkeys in summer, their famous rivets. Our first contacts with the monkeys thanks to the peanuts we bought at the entrance were not cordial, and several of them started to come up with a somewhat aggressive attitude. At that time a young man from the place who is dedicated to "helping" tourists, offered for a donation to interact between macaques and us. It was money well invested (although never tips or donations will satisfy a Hindu), because it knows how to treat them and there we had a quiet and enjoyable time to feed a monkey on our shoulders. It's well worth it.
