Trip Planner: Europe / France / Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur / French Riviera - Cote d'Azur / St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat / Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild
Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild constructed Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild between 1905 and 1912. Each of the villa's nine lush gardens has a unique theme: Florentine, Spanish, French, exotic, a stone garden, Japanese, rose, Provençal, and a garden de Sèvres. Formed under the direction of landscape architect Achille Duchêne, the gardens form the shape of a ship, meant to be viewed from the terrace of the house. The shape was inspired by the architect's voyage on the liner Île de France. The original gardeners were dressed as sailors, wearing berets with red pom-poms. Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild Reviews
Quelle magnifique villa que celle que Béatrix de Rotschild à fait construire au début du XIXème siècle ! Here is a beautiful woman, intelligent, cultured, rich and liberated before the hour, who, not content to marry a commoner (from a family of bankers) from whom she will divorce because of her addiction to gambling, has led her life masterfully ... His achievements in the garden surrounding the palace are superb What a pleasure to stroll through these enchanting gardens and admire the magnificent view of the Bay of Villefranche of the JARDIN of SEVRES, the patios surrounded by water, daturas, arums, honeysuckles, strelitzia, papyrus, monsteras of the ESPAGNOL JARDIN, statues and grand staircases of JARDIN FLORENTIN, arcades, fountains, sculptures, gargoyles, gnomes of the JARDIN LAPIDAIRE, drawings drawn in the sand, lanterns, water basins to fish oranges and whites, PAgodas of the JAPANESE JARDIN, giant cacti (agaves, prickly pears, aloe arborescents) and succulent plants of the EXOTIC JARDIN (formerly Mexican Garden), the 100 varieties of rose of ROSERAIE, agapanthes, olive trees, pines, lavenders, thyme, laurels, rosemary of the JARDIN PROVENCAL, and finally The Temple of Love, the hundred-year-old olive trees, the palm trees, the agave, the lawns, water lily ponds and the musical water jets of the JARDIN in THE FRANCAISE.... Yesi! no less than 9 beautiful gardens where it is nice to muzzle, to the sound of birdsong and the crystalline sounds of fountains, waterfalls or water jets. We feel elsewhere, in a protected universe, where nothing can reach us, only the beauty of the place. The villa, too, is admirable is gives a precise idea of the life of Beatrix. masterful entrance with columns and mezzanines, where Béatrix gave his receptions.... lounge overlooking the sea where we discover seats stretched with fabrics for Béatrix and his guests, but also other very small, for his animals........ masterful bedroom and period dress........ bathroom........ collections of porcelain, objects and clothing from Asia, paintings and hangings and precious furniture, and finally covered terrace from where we discover the architecture of the French garden, true bow of a ship darting into the Mediterranean! A film of about twenty minutes retraces the life of the time... and it's like the Belle Epoque! Oh, really! this is a place not to be missed under any circumstances, if you love gardens and rare plants, and if you want to discover the life of a free woman, but also demanding and quite eccentric!
Though a beautiful setting, the building itself is poorly maintained and clearly crumbling inside and out. Despite the fact that it's full of tourists paying 15 euros per entry, the garden has an alga... more »
Beautiful house in lovely gardens with amazing views. It's not the easiest place to find, but the lady working in the tourist office was very friendly and helpful. She gave us a free map and marked the way on the map. The entrance charge is I THINK 15 euros (double check that as I'm not 100% sure) and the restaurant is rather posh and pricey, but the service was friendly (we only had coffees). The house itself is lovely, with lovely views from all sides of the house. The gardens are beautiful, and there is a 'dancing fountain' which changes in time to classical music and is very impressive and entertaining. I'd highly recommend a visit.
Amazing place! Everything is very well kept and the tour is very interesting and detailed. The fountains and the gardens are simply breathtaking, a must see! The gift shop is crazy expensive and the restaurant could be cheaper too, especially considering you have to pay 14 Euros to even get in. All in all, amazing place! Went on a weekend in November and it was very empty and calm
