Tumbleweed, Paris

#165 of 423 in Shopping in Paris
Tumbleweed opened in 1989... a thimble-sized shop in the Bastille area of Paris, on a street that nobody walked down. In 1993 the shop doubled in size (to 160 square feet!) and moved to the Marais, where we have been ever since.

Since our beginnings, the world has met with globalization and ever-increasing uniformity. Yet Tumbleweed has continued to present a selection of unique and handmade merchandise. Everything we carry is made in Europe. And behind each collection is an artist, designer or maker with an interesting story.

Tumbleweed may look like a toy store because much of our selection is colorful and playful. But take a closer look and you'll see that many of the things are meant for adults.

For engineers (and people who like a challenge), we have a selection of beautifully-crafted wooden puzzles and brain teasers. Some have only a few pieces and look quite simple. Those are usually the most difficult!

For the home, we have a range of Paris tea towels, made in France by a family who has been producing quality Basque linen for 5 generations. We also have a collection of humorous wooden spatulas called "Oh no! Not the soup!"

For the little ones, we offer a fabulous range of soft leather baby slippers. We have cuddly hand puppets made of organic cotton. And a selection of handmade wooden toys and puzzles.

Our beautiful spinning tops are for both children and adults. They are hand-turned, hand-painted and incredibly well-balanced.

  • This was one of our must-see destinations in Paris, and I'm so glad we got there. My sister had bought some special gifts for my children years ago and gushed about the selection of hand-crafted items. It did not disappoint. I love the hand-carved spoon and can't wait to give it as a gift.
  • It was one of our essential places to buy children's items, until I had a problem with one of my previous purchases. As long as everything goes well the customer service will be good, but if you have a problem you may be disappointed just as we have been.
