The Catacombs of Paris, Paris

3.7
One of the most astonishing sights in Paris, The Catacombs of Paris hold the remains of an estimated six million people's bones in a labyrinth of caverns and tunnels. Under Paris, the stone mines contain a harrowing arrangement of skulls and femurs that form many walls. Some of the arrangements are artistic, such as a heart-shaped outline on one wall, formed with skulls embedded in surrounding tibia bones. Audio guides are available in English that enable you to discover the site for yourself. • It is not possible that the queues go on snail-mode. In 2018! In an hour we went to 3 meters (with even a thousand people before). Allow 200 people at a time, but the counter at the entrance is between 153 and 174. We gave up and came back in the evening. On the website they write that the closure is at 20.30 without specifying though (except in small on a page that has nothing to do with the schedule) that the last entry is actually at 19.30. We were more or less 200 people at 18.40. of us joined perhaps 100 up to 19.20, where we were informed of the impending closure. We have. Tried to continue, but nothing. 19.30 behind closed doors and goodbye. Unfortunately Mondays are closed so no visit. Please update the site with an inscription in capital letters LAST ADMISSION 7.30 PM (for future visitors) and improved the system. Many complained that a ticket on 2 was not read by the scanner at the entrance and this slowed down by bad entry.

  • Preserves the bones of more than six milla people; open to the public in the late nineteenth century. Over the years the bones were used to create decorations in underground quarries of Paris creating a macabre and atmospheric environment.

  • This is one of the best places to visit if you are interested in science and history. The places is really well maintained and is fascinating to look at. You actually have to go down 30m below the ground. Pay extra for the audio guide it is worth it. They don't allow tripods inside and the place is not very well lit so if you are photography enthusiast prepare for high ISO low light photos.
  • Top tips... Get there about half hour before it opens in the morning, or go there around 6pm to reduce the queue wait. We waited about half hour which was OK. If you have to go outside of those times, buy a queue jump ticket, although consider that you will still probably be waiting about an hour Get the audio experience. If you don't, you will pretty much be looking at what seems to be the same thing through the whole walk. You don't need boots or warm clothing etc. If you're 6ft or taller, you will need to watch your head in places. Take a torch if you want to see down the closed off paths. Ask the people in the ticket office about any cool or scary stories... They have some great things to say. I won't ruin it for you. We paid 17 euros I think to get in and we enjoyed it. I'd say its a do once and never again experience but, nonetheless, it was enjoyable.
