  • It's Greek methodology. Hercules married Dejanire after defeating Achelnos and entrusted him to the centaur Nessus who had offered to make him pass the River Evenne. In love with the princess, Nessus tries to abduct her but Hercules will reach the centaur of an arrow poisoned with the blood of the Hydra. In short, it is not at all a romantic story and there is nothing cheerful. In this sculpture we can observe the face of Dejanire who is afraid, but also the triumphant look of the centaur.

  • To understand the sculptures of the Tuileries Garden you have to either be passionate about Greek Mythology or document yourself. This allegory "Dejanire abducted by the Centaur Nessus" is linked to the legend of Hercules (The half Greek God, who had to do his twelve works to atone for his faults) and who has as his wife Dejanire. It is taken from the writings of the ancient poet Ovid (43 BC- 18 AD) in the Metamorphoses. Hercules, who must cross the river Evénos (Greece), entrusts Déjanire to Centaurness Nessus (Horse Man) who, in love with her, kidnaps her! This is the story of this marble work from 1892, by Laurent Honoré Marqueste (1848-1920). Alas, the Centaur has lost his left hoof and Dejanire his right forearm. The statue is already time-tested. Maintenance is deficient.... For the rest of the soap opera, Hercules gets angry and chases Nessus and then wounds him with a poisoned arrow. Before he dies, Nessus, who wants revenge, gives Dejanire his bloodied tunic stained by poison. It's not over ... , Dejanire who wants revenge on Hercules who deceives her, gives her the poisoned tunic. Hercules dies and Dejanire of spite commits suicide!! Just good people ....( SIC) This work is located on the north side of the Grand Basin of the Tuileries garden, towards Rue de Rivoli. The metro station "Tuileries" line 1, serves the garden.
