  • I never would have noticed this monument had I not become curious about why a woman had a camera lens pointed through a barricade of wrought-iron bars. She stood on a sidewalk that parallels the rue d...  more »
  • Behind the gates of the bedside of the reformed church of the Oratory of the Louvre, on the rue de Rivoli, is this great monument. It is erected in memory of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny (1519-1572), murdered during the terrible night of the massacres of Saint Bartholomew, on August 24, 1572, of sad memory! This monument, is an allegory on the merits of the testament of Coligny engraved on the pedestal. Gaspard de Coligny, is depicted standing in Admiral's robe, in a sculpted frame of Renaissance style, reminiscent of a window, since he had been thrown out the window by his executioners. The statue of Coligny, is surrounded at his feet by two seated women wearing a Toga. The one on the right, which holds a Palm, symbolizes religion. The one on the left, which holds a wreath, symbolizes the homeland with the reminder of its action at "Saint Quentin 1557" to defend France. The frame is topped by an open marquee bearing the "armes de Coligny", an Eagle topped with a Crown, and its motto "I feel them all". On the pedestal, you can read the words of the Admiral's will, on a marble plaque, "I would gladly forget all things that affect only my particular, either of insults, or of ultrages, as for the glory of God, and the public rest, there may be only one. " As for the dates of life of Coligny, inscribed on the monument, that of the birth in 1517 is marked, Coligny was born in 1519. It was his brother Odet who was born in 1517. This monument is the result of a public subscription in 1889 by the Protestant community. It is the work of the architect Scellier de Gisors and the sculptor Gustave Crauck (1827-1905).
