La particularité de cette statue est que celle-ci fut cachée d’un drap noir en 1871 pendant de longues années, suite à la perte de l’Alsace et de la Lorraine. more »The peculiarity of this statue is that it was hidden from a black sheet in 1871 for many years, following the loss of Alsace and Lorraine.

Each of these statues rest on a small pavilion, called Gabriel's gatehouse, in memory of the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel (1698-1782) who built the square under Louis XV. Located at the north-eastern entrance of this octagonal square, on the Rue de Rivoli, the allegorical statues of the cities of Lille and Strasbourg were made around 1836 by the French sculptor and painter, originally from Geneva, Jean-Jacques (known as James) Pradier ( 1790-1852), author of several sculptures, bas-reliefs and famous paintings, many of which are on display in the Louvre Museum, including "Injured Niobide" (1822), "Shackled Prometheus" (1827) and "The Three Graces" (1831), as well as at the Musée d'Orsay ("Sapho", 1852) as well as several other museums in France. As with the other allegorical statues depicting French cities in the Place de la Concorde, they would need a little love to restore them to their former glory (at least out of respect for the cities they represent).
