  • In this square, there are 8 statues and it can be seen that the statues representing the cities of Marseille and Lyon are the work of the sculptor Pierre Petitot (1760-1840). For each statue, it is a woman who represents a city of France. In fact, each gate marked the boundaries of an old ditch, but these were filled in 1853.

  • At each corner of place de la Concorde (octagonal in shape as proposed by the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel (1698-1782) in the original development plan of Place Louis XV, future Place de la Concorde) is a statue of a city French. They are more or less arranged in the square according to the geographical position of the city, i.e., according to the clockwise: to the northwest, the cities of Brest and Rouen (works by Jean-Pierre Cortot, 1787-1843), to the north-east, Lille and Strasbourg, carried out by James Pradier (1790-1852), to the southeast, the allegorical statues of the cities of Lyon and Marseille, works by the French sculptor Pierre Petitot (1760-1840) and at the SO, Bordeaux and Nantes created by Louis-Denis Caillouette (1790-1868). Although they were made by different sculptors, the eight allegorical statues representing the cities of France have a certain homogeneity in the composition, a crown representing a castle tower, a very hairstyle richly realized, a draped dress, a sitting position, the gaze turned to the center of the square and carry with each hand elements representing the wealth or weapons of the city. Represented.
