As happens sometimes when it starts badly, with the "Guigne"! Of the two sculptors planned by the banker Osiris in 1889, who finances the work, he will remain alive only Antonin Mercié (1845-1916) to realize it. Falguière had returned the soul in 1900, before having done anything. This monument represents a collection of poems by the master "the night of may" published in 1835. This is a dialogue between the poet and his muse. The poet here is supposed to be overwhelmed by his sufferings to "give birth" to his work, while the Muse, which stands next to it as the allegory of "poetry", must inspire him!! This seems to have worked.... Well understood, the work that we see today is true to this story. Musset sits on a bench, dressed in a coat, looking for inspiration. It is still covered partly by a blanket, because the nights are cool and it is boots. The Muse standing behind him, who should inspire him, puts his left hand on the shoulder, tender attention.... This sculpture, at the request of the poet's sister, had been installed in the square, in front of the Comédie Française and inaugurated in 1906. When restructures place Colette, the monument was removed in 1964. But this monument remains in reserve and it is finally put on its current location only in 1981, that is 17 years after or 75 years after its inauguration!!

This work was carried out by the sculptors Alexandre Falguière and Antonin Mercié who finished it after the death of Falguière in 1900. Initially implanted at the corner of the Comédie Française in Paris, it was only in 1981 that it was installed in its current location. A beautiful sculpture. Come by Metro, line 2, station "Monceau".
