  • This square is located between the Boulevard of Sevastopol at no. 98 bis and Rue Saint Martin in front of the CNAM. It was created during the Paris development by Haussmann, under Napoleon III, in 1868. The Chief Architect, Jean Charles Alphand, has led this project as those of the large Parisian parks (Butte Chaumont, Parc Montsouris, Bois de Vincennes, etc.). His seniority allows him to have large trees, chestnut tree of India, which provide pleasant shadings in summer; But the proximity of the traffic lanes, makes it a noisy space. Styled "A la française", it is decorated with two basins with sculptures in its Center, fortunately put in water. The South-facing basin is dedicated to mercury and music, the North represents the two mamelles of France: agriculture and industry! These two basins are surrounded by a beautiful wrought iron grille. The square is also surrounded by a beautiful fence, stone-sized, open balusters. A beautiful Linden called Crimean, is located on the entrance of the Boulevard of Sevastopol. In this public place there are play areas, benches for sitting, toilets. A granite column of the Jura, commemorates the Napoleonic victories from 1854 to 1855, in the Crimea. For me, this very crowded square, suffers from a somewhat faulty maintenance and lacks of calm, because of its location. It has charm, when the fountains are put in water, in the summer season. This square is accessible by metro station "Réaumur Sebastopol" lines 3 and 4, then you have to go up the Boulevard Sebastopol to the Gare de l'Est.

  • Cool
  • An impeccable green space. It is a real gem for the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. In fact, Paris is far from being a green city compared to Berlin, Vienna, etc. According to a census, the number of trees in the city of light is only 184500. The large half of them are planted on the edge of the streets. Despite this, throughout the haussmannian neighborhoods there is a near absence of verdures. "Paris is beautiful but monotonous. It lacks significantly trees, my Lithuanian friend commented on his beloved city. And he's not wrong.
