  • I don't know if it's a pretty statue to decorate this garden but I notice that there are missing flowers at the foot of it in order to attract the viewer's eye. I approached this statue by trampling the lawn because there is no way to see this work very close. I also note that there is no information panel to explain this work. It's a shame that this sculptor is not showcased in this beautiful tile garden. I think it would be better developed in the Luxembourg garden because in this one there is a horticulture school.

  • This bronze work installed in 2000, sits in the middle of a lawn in the tuileries garden near the alley of Castiglione. It depicts a with voluptuous and very muscular shapes, long legs and powerful torso, as the American sculptor Gaston Lachaise (1882-1935) liked to represent her in 1932. It seems that it was his wife who inspired the artist, who said: "At twenty, in Paris," Lachaise wrote in 1928, "I put a young American person who immediately became the primary inspiration that awakened my vision and the leading influence that has directed my forces." The young American in question, Isabel Nagle, would eventually become Lachaise's wife, and Standing Woman and other works are certainly inspired by her. In Isabel, Lachaise seems to have seen greater forces and principles of human life: "You are," he once told her, "The Goddess I am searching to express in all things." Gaston Lachaise was born in Paris and studied at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts before immigrating to the USA in 1903. This work amazes and has an undeniable charm, despite the fact that it escapes the stereotypes of female beauty as one imagines it at first!
