The Place du Châtelet is a public square in Paris, on the right bank of the river Seine, on the borderline between the 1st and 4th arrondissements. It lies at the north end of the Pont au Change, a bridge that connects the Île de la Cité, near the Palais de Justice and the Conciergerie, to the right bank. The closest métro station is Châtelet 15px 15px 15px 15px 15px 15pxFeaturesThe name "Châtelet" refers to the stronghold, the Grand Châtelet, that guarded the northern end of the Pont au Change, containing the offices of the prévôt de Paris and a number of prisons, until it was demolished from 1802-10.At the square's center is the Fontaine du Palmier, designed in 1806 by architect and engineer François-Jean Bralle (1750-1832) to celebrate French victories in battle. It has a circular basin, 6m in diameter, from which a column rises in the form of a palm tree's trunk 18m tall. The palm trunk is surmounted by a gilded figure of the goddess, Victory, holding a laurel wreath in each upraised hand; the goddess figure stands on a base ornamented with bas-relief eagles. The gilded finial is by sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot.

  • Place du Châtelet-the famous Parisian square, located on the right bank of the Seine, at the beginning of one of the oldest Parisian streets-Saint-Denis... The Square is located on the site of the medieval fortress of Grand Chatle, built in 1130 by Louis VI Tolstoy for the protection of the island of Site and the royal residence. Châtelet was demolished in Napoleonic times, replacing the fortress on the Fountain de la Victory, reminding of the victories of Bonaparte in Italy, Egypt and Germany. A pity... The Fortress looked prettier...

  • Finally a fountain! Compared to a city like Rome, they are so few here in the midst of all this concrete, that the only sight of a fountain is already psychologically refreshing. The fountain of the place du Châtelet, and the square itself, were conceived under the first Empire. It commemorates the Napoleonic victories and the 4 Sphinx, which in fact give it an entirely original and unique aspect, suffice in any case to convince. Located in the heart of Paris where an uninterrupted crowd of passers-by comes and goes, this fountain is ideal to take a little break in the shade before starting again more beautiful.
